Hey everyone,

Welcome to the introduction post for Video Loss, a new Substack publication I’m launching to cover and critique politics and the media through a progressive lens.

I’m launching with the goal of producing one newsletter a week. They will run every week on Tuesday. I’d love to build up to doing more, but this seems like a good starting point.

Each newsletter will contain one article-sized bit of analysis, commentary, or reporting, along with a few links and smaller stories. As I said up top, I’m focusing on the intersection of progressive politics and media. I’m certainly going to be covering the coming Presidential election and the government’s response to the pandemic, but I also want to get deeper into stories that may not be receiving as much attention. Some ideas I’ve been bouncing around for the first few weeks of the newsletter include:

  • Following the coronavirus’ impact on digital and traditional journalism.

  • Writing about the future of progressive politics in America post-Bernie Sanders.

  • Investigating how media companies are using their PPP relief loans.

  • Analyzing how the coronavirus depression is accelerating the shift towards independent media platforms like Patreon and Substack

  • Detailing the role new media will play in the 2020 election, especially considering the likely moratorium on in-person campaigning.

So, yeah, we’ll have fun here. I’m going to try and take full advantage of the tools Substack allows me to harness, including community posts, custom homepage designs, and audio (maybe!).
